Tiffin Tales: An Introduction
It is a truth universally acknowledged that anyone in possession of a good laptop must be in want of a blog.
Everyone (including me obviously, since I’m here) believes that they have a story to tell and that their story matters. Today, it takes less time to publish a story, so it is accessible to anyone in the world, than it takes for you to read this sentence. (This is in fact, exactly what my blogging platform advertised! I wonder what Jane Austen would have to say about that?)
So here is my story, and I will leave to you to decide whether it is worth telling. Like most good stories, this one too is about love. And you obviously don’t get any prizes for guessing the objects of my affection, since they are right up there in my blog tagline.
I can trace back my love for food and exploring to the days my dad would take me to “town” (that’s downtown Bombay for you), and my mom would pack a tiffin to take with us. Now we pause for a moment because Microsoft Word is giving me a spell-check error and a lot of you are going “Umm..?” Well, to the uninitiated, ‘tiffin’ is an Indian-English (yes, there does exist such a thing) word for a mid-day meal. It is also used to describe the box in which said meal is carried.
I still remember the sense of wonder and awe I felt as I walked around town taking in the huge buildings, the crowded alleys, the smell of freshly baked bread at a bakery my dad used to take me to (which still stands to this day, but that is of course, another story). For a kid from the suburbs, the big bad city was a magical place. Everything around me was unfamiliar, but I never felt lost – my fascination and curiosity made me a part of it, made me belong. And to this day, I am thankful that I still have that big wide-eyed expression every time I explore a new place (makes me look like a dork sometimes as I bump into people, but hey, it’s a trade-off).
Food is a big part of my travels and my life. To say that I love food – cooking it, eating it, sharing it – would be an understatement. In fact, one friend once commented – “You know what’s amazing? That you aren’t morbidly obese given the trance-like state you go into when thinking of food.” (Thanks buddy!) I have been accused by another of once stuffing my face with an entire brownie just so he couldn’t have it. (This is not true. It was only half a brownie.)
And to be able to relive these experiences and share them – I could kiss the guy that invented the camera! (But then again, I could also kiss the guy who invented chocolate, cheese, the whisk, the ipod, the little black dress…). Again, thanks to these guys who keep inventing new stuff (so that six months after you buy a new laptop, they can tell you it’s obsolete), we now no longer have to spend hundreds of dollars developing film to see how bad our shots actually were in the first place. Instant gratification (or letdown as the case may be)! And though there is more of the latter than I would want, I learn everyday..
So with that background, and armed with my passion for all things related to these loves of mine, here I am, poised to share that wonder with you.
